PRESSER: Charlton Athletic vs Norwich City - McLean back in the mix

Eastern Daily Press · By Adam Harvey

Last weekend’s limp defeat to Portsmouth extended the Canaries’ losing run to five consecutive Championship games, with City also failing to find the net in their last two outings.

The result leaves Norwich 21st in the table, just one point above the relegation zone, as they enter a crucial run of fixtures.

That run begins tomorrow with a trip to the capital to face Nathan Jones’ Charlton, who are also struggling for form. They have gone eight games without a win, with their latest setback coming last weekend in a damaging 2-0 defeat away to Watford.

Clement will be keen to capitalise on the Addicks’ struggles and pile further misery on Jones, having completed the double over his opposite number last season with successive 1-0 victories.

The most recent of those wins came in March, when Pelle Mattsson’s strike secured all three points and marked Norwich’s most recent clean sheet.

Vladan Kovacevic was in goal for that victory in South London and will return this weekend after sitting out the games against Southampton and Portsmouth due to concussion.

Anthony Musaba is expected to be back in contention after illness ruled him out of the defeat to Portsmouth.

Captain Kenny McLean is also back in the mix after missing the past three league games with an ankle issue, Clement confirmed. However, the City skipper is not yet ready to play a full 90 minutes.

The trip will come too soon for Mirko Topic, who continues his recovery from an ACL injury. The Serbian midfielder returned to action last Friday, playing 45 minutes in the Under-21s’ win over West Ham at Colney after almost a year on the sidelines.

Papa Amadou Diallo (thigh) remains out for ‘several weeks’, but the club are hopeful a recent visit to a specialist has identified the cause of the Senegalese winger’s ongoing fitness issues.

Gabe Forsyth (knee) has suffered a minor setback in his recovery, having featured for the development side in several recent games. However, Clement confirmed a scan had revealed no major cause for concern.

Mo Toure (shoulder) and Ali Ahmed (ACL) remain long-term absentees, with Toure having undergone surgery and expected to be out until January, while Ahmed is set to miss most of the campaign.

Despite their recent struggles, Charlton remain unbeaten at home this season.

Jones’ side picked up wins over Derby and Preston in August before sharing the points with QPR, Portsmouth and Bristol City at The Valley.

Goals have been a real problem for the Addicks, with only Cardiff, Derby and Preston having scored fewer.

Striker Matty Godden has been a big miss in that department, but he is closing in on a return, as is key midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah. Rob Apter (knee) and Collins Sichenje (knee) remain long-term absentees.
