Alex Mitchell rejoins Argyle in Charlton transfer

The central defender has rejoined the Pilgrims on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee after his outstanding 2025/26 season with them on loan from Championship club Charlton Athletic.

Argyle moved quickly to finalise the deal for Mitchell, paying an undisclosed transfer fee, following the £4 million-plus move of their striker Lorent Tolaj to Bristol City.

Mitchell, 24, had been on Argyle's wanted list ever since the end of last season and joins Alex Hartridge, Julio Pleguezuelo, Mathias Ross and Wes Harding as centre-back options for Cleverley.

The head coach said: "I’m so happy that we have got Mitch back with us. He was superb for us last season and everyone knows what a huge presence he is, both in the defence and off the field.

“You need characters like him in a group if you are to be successful. What is also so nice is his desire to return. He clearly enjoyed playing in green and white, and for him to want to come back is very pleasing to us.”

Mitchell becomes Argyle's sixth summer signing, following the arrivals of Harding - who was on loan from Millwall over the final three months of last term, Hartridge, midfielder Harvey White and goalkeepers Murphy Cooper and James Storer.

Argyle director of football Derek Adams said: “We knew at the end of last season that we wanted to bring Alex back to Home Park, and as soon as we were in a position that we could make it happen, we moved quickly.

“I know this signing will be very popular with the Green Army, which is always a positive thing. He is already a good, strong defender, and at 24 is going to continue to develop. It’s great to have him back."

Mitchell had 12 months remaining on his contract at Charlton after joining them from their South London rivals Millwall in the summer of 2024.

He made 26 starts plus five substitute appearances during the following season as the Addicks were promoted to the Championship by winning the Championship Play-Off Final 1-0 against Leyton Orient at Wembley.

Mitchell joined Argyle last August after playing only once for Charlton at the start of last term, in a Carabao Cup first round tie against Stevenage.

Charlton manager Nathan Jones said: "We thank Alex for all his hard work and all he did for us. He played a pivotal role in the first half of our promotion season and then he obviously had a very successful loan at Plymouth.

"He was brilliant around the place, fantastic for the environment and we wish him all the best. He was a pleasure to coach, a pleasure to have around and he’s been a credit to himself."

Harding and Mitchell have now both completed permanent moves after being on loan to Argyle in 2025/26, and the club retain an interest in bringing back Owen Dale as well.

The 27-year-old midfielder was taken on loan by the Pilgrims from Oxford United last term but was released earlier this summer and is now a free agent.
