Tom Cleverley 'learning all the time' about Michael Baidoo

The pair did not work with each other during the 2025/26 campaign, after Cleverley was appointed as the head coach last June, because the Ghanaian attacking midfielder went on loan to Umm Salal of the Qatari Stars League instead.

Baidoo, who cost a transfer fee in excess of £1 million when he joined from Swedish side Elfsborg in January 2025, still has another two seasons left on his contract.

The 27-year-old has been training with Argyle since the start of the pre-season in late June and scored a goal in each of their wins away to Plymouth Parkway and Bath City.

Baidoo played on the left of midfield in a 4-4-2 formation in both of those matches but was tried out as a striker at Torquay United on Tuesday night.

He and Owen Oseni were sent on as half-time substitutes to play up front, with Argyle short of other forward options at the moment after the £4m transfer of Lorent Tolaj to Championship club Bristol City.

However, Baidoo did not look particularly comfortable in that role and if he is to make a mark with the Pilgrims in the forthcoming campaign it will almost certainly be in an attacking midfield position.

Cleverley said: "It's my job to work with him. He has been an expensive purchase for the football club and sometimes it just doesn't work.

"He's a technical player, you can see that. He came into a relegation-fighting environment, for a coach (Miron Muslic) who maybe liked a slightly different style, so let's not then just write him off, and he has spent a year in Qatar.

"I'm absolutely here to work with Michael. I'm learning about him as much as he's learning about me. He has been more effective off the left than he was (against Torquay) down the middle.

"So learning all the time. His attitude is first class and you can see he's as sharp as anything, he's fit and he has got a lot of quality."

Baidoo, who has taken on the squad number of 20, and his Argyle team-mates will play their fourth game of the pre-season away to National League South side Truro City on Saturday.
