Argyle chief executive explains reason for club redundancies

Plymouth Live · Chris Errington

Berne described it as 'an unfortune thing we have had to do' and recognised that it was 'really heartbreaking' for people who had lost their jobs.

He said: "I'm not going to talk about individuals. It's just simply not fair. I know some things are more visible than others. This redundancy process has affected nearly every single area of the club.

"I have been here four months every day now, everybody who works at this club loves it. It is not that there are some people who index more higher on their affinity for Plymouth Argyle.

"The people who work here, and whether you experience them on a Saturday behind the bar or in the ticket office, love to work for Plymouth Argyle. Everybody is trying to do their very best for the club.

"We have tried to do something where we have made cuts where I hope you won't feel the impact of it, whether you come to a match, whether you watch Argyle TV, whatever your experience in the club.

"We are trying to cut the costs without anybody seeing really a fundamental difference. That might mean some people have to do a bit more at the club, it might mean we have to reorganise the way we go about it.

"We have made around 18-19 people redundant across all areas and I'm hopeful that actually from let's call it a service perspective the thing that you experience doesn't change. I don't want anybody to feel like there is a difference there.

"We have had to make the redundancies to try and reduce the cost to the club. It's worth saying it's not people that get made redundant it's their roles.

"So we have assessed the roles and then there has been a fair and open, and honest process with all the employees affected to say we go into consultation to talk about what the options are but we have got to try and reduce the cost.

"Equally, when it has been decided that roles will be removed there has been a fair and open process about selection.

"So I recognise there are individuals who have lost their job and that's really heartbreaking, no matter what their situation is, and nobody wants that but in order to reduce the costs of the club we have had to go through that process."

He added: "I'm optimistic people will get the same good stuff we have been giving them but in the background we have taken the cost base down."
