Argyle striker Lorent Tolaj poised for Bristol City transfer

Plymouth Live understands Bristol City have agreed to pay in excess of £4 million for Tolaj plus add-ons and a medical is planned to take place in London.

Some of the transfer fee that Argyle receive for Tolaj will go to his former club, Port Vale, as part of a sell-on clause, although it is not clear how much.

Tolaj signed for the Pilgrims on a four-year deal last August after they activated a £1.2m release clause in his contract with Port Vale and he went on to have an excellent 2025/26 season.

The Swiss striker finished the campaign as Argyle's top scorer with a total of 21 goals, including 17 in League One, even though he missed much of February and March due to a couple of injuries.

Bristol City have previously been linked with two other high-scoring League One strikers this summer - Dom Ballard at Leyton Orient and Exeter City's Jayden Wareham.

Tolaj has been with Argyle at the start of pre-season and played the first half of their 4-1 win away to Plymouth Parkway last Saturday, although he did not get on the scoresheet.

Should Tolaj complete his transfer to the Bristol City he will make an early return to Home Park as the Robins will play a pre-season game against Argyle on Saturday, August 1.

One of his new team-mates would also be Plymouth-born former Argyle midfielder Adam Randell, who signed for Bristol City last summer following the Pilgrims' relegation from the Championship.

Tolaj played in the National League for Aldershot as recently as the 2023/24 season and has since played in League Two with Port Vale and then in League One at Argyle.

Now his upwards trajectory could be set to continue in the Championship at Bristol City, who appointed Lincoln City's highly successful boss Michael Skubala as their new head coach at the end of May.

Tolaj has been linked with a number of clubs this summer, including Bolton Wanderers, Preston North End and Sheffield United, as well as Scottish sides Celtic and Rangers.

There is also renewed speculation about Argyle striker Bim Pepple, with football transfer reporter Darren Witcoop suggesting on social media site X that Championship club Portsmouth have 'stepped up their interest' in the Canadian.
