Alan Shearer would like Sunderland to win Europa League - on one condition

Chronicle Live · Ross Gregory

The Premier League legend has always had a feisty relationship with the Black Cats, praising them at times but also offering little jibes at Newcastle's neighbours from down the road.

He was complimentary about Regus Le Bris' side last season as they stormed to seventh spot in the Premier League table after their incredible promotion the year before. It was a performance that saw Sunderland qualify for the Europa League for the first time in their history.

And while Shearer doesn't think - or want - Sunderland to win the competition, he has admitted he would gladly see captain Granit Xhaka lift the trophy in Frankfurt next June if it meant England would win the World Cup.

"Haha, yeah, I would take that," he admitted to Betfair's Hot Take Hotline. "I would take England winning the World Cup and Sunderland winning the Europa League.

"But there’s fantasy and there’s reality and Sunderland are not winning the Europa League.”

The fan also posed a similar question to Shearer asking if he would also sacrifice his 260 Premier League goals for England to win the World Cup.

The Premier League record scorer answered: “Yeah, I would sacrifice that, why not. We have never won the World Cup in my time, so, I would give it all up, yeah, all those goals up for England winning the World Cup. Absolutely.”
