Chris Wood added a second just after the hour mark, before Morgan Gibbs-White added a third three minutes later, with Igor Jesus scoring a fourth in the 37th minute.
Elliot Anderson scored a fifth for Forest late into injury time to rub salt in the wounds. It was an afternoon to forget for Regis Le Bris and Sunderland, who are still in with a shout of European football, but need a vast improvement heading into the final five games.

Here's how Matty Hewitt rated the Sunderland stars against Nottingham Forest:
Robin Roefs - 3
Big save to deny Hutchinson early doors, but an absolute howler to gift Forest a second. Poor by his usual standards.
Nordi Mukiele - 4
Struggled with Forest's left-hand side of the pitch with Gibbs-White coming inside and Neco Williams offering width. Not at the level we're accustomed to seeing.
Dan Ballard - 6
Will feel aggrieved to not have opened the scoring.
Omar Alderete - 4
Really not his best game. Did improve in the second half, but still poor.
Rewarded for his goal against Aston Villa with a start at left-back, but struggled with Omari Hutchinson. Nothing he could do about the own goal.
Granit Xhaka - 6
One of the very few to come out of the game with any credit.
Noah Sadiki - 4
One of his most disappointing games in a Sunderland shirt. He was sloppy in possession and held onto the ball for too long.
Habib Diarra - 3 (Wilson Isidor 65)
Almost non-existent in the first half and then struggled in the second when he did get his foot on the ball.
Bright in the opening stages but hooked at half-time. Felt harsh given there were worse players on the pitch than him in the opening 45 minutes.
Enzo Le Fee - 5
Worked his socks off and tried to make things happen, but to no avail.
Brian Brobbey - 5
Wasn't in the game bar the opening ten minutes.
Reinildo - 5 (Rigg 45)
Shored things up for Sunderland when he came onto the pitch.
Wilson Isidor - 4 (Diarra 65)
Tried to impact the game, but like his teammates couldn't find a rhythm. Walked back having only been on the pitch for 25 minutes, as Forest scored a fifth.
