It does not necessarily reflect the view of The Herald. JENNY SUGARMAN has highlighted the long haul nature of the season after Wrexham suffered their first defeat in the Adran Premier.

The Reds had opened the defence of their title with four consecutive victories, but the fine run came to a halt as they lost 3-2 at home to The New Saints.

This was just one match out of 20 that Wrexham will face in the league and head coach Sugarman told the club: “It’s a long season, right, and there’s no trophies handed out this week after game five. So, we know where we want to be come the end of the season.

“Sometimes, you get what you need and not what you want and we’ll use this performance, this game, this result to make sure that we’re better.”

In front of a crowd of close to 750 at The Rock, the Reds looked to have salvaged a point when Natasha Thomas’ goal made it two-apiece in stoppage time.

However, that wasn’t yet the end of the drama and a second goal of the afternoon from Fiona Barry made sure of The New Saints’ fifth consecutive win.

Lexie Harrison was also on the scoresheet for the visitors, while skipper Jodie Bartle headed in Wrexham’s opening goal of the contest.

The New Saints are at the top of the table with 15 points, three clear of chasing Wrexham and Swansea, who meet on Sunday.
