Steven Gerrard hired as former Aston Villa boss in surprise link-up

Birmingham Mail · Chris Burns

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has joined forces with former Manchester United captain Gary Neville in an unexpected alliance. The former Aston Villa boss is following in the footsteps of his old Anfield teammate Jamie Carragher by becoming part of Neville's fresh football programme.

The Overlap Daily launches every weekday at 4pm on YouTube, kicking off on Friday, October 9, with Carragher, Neville and YouTube personality Mark Goldbridge fronting the inaugural episode.

The lineup also includes Joe Hart, Jamie Redknapp, Ashley Young, Tim Sherwood, Kelly Cates, Duncan Ferguson, Mark Crossley, Becky Ives and Peter Schmeichel.

Gerrard, who's back doing punditry work with TNT Sports this campaign, will make his regular presenting bow with sports broadcaster Becky Ives on Monday's slot.

The programme promises supporters a comprehensive daily digest of breaking football stories and discussion, with special guests offering behind-the-scenes knowledge alongside the hosts' analysis and forecasts. Viewer questions and a phone-in feature will also be incorporated.

After Monday's episode with Gerrard and Ives, Tuesday's programme will showcase Cates, Young and Hart. Wednesday's instalment will be helmed by former Tottenham pair Redknapp and Sherwood.

Thursday's edition will feature Everton legend Ferguson and former Wales goalkeeper Crossley taking the reins as presenters. Friday's programme will be fronted by Goldbridge, with regular appearances from Carragher, Hart and Schmeichel as co-hosts.

Overlap Daily follows the remarkable triumph of Neville's existing podcast, The Overlap, which has racked up over 38 million monthly views since launching in 2021. High-profile figures including David Beckham, Tyson Fury and Rory McIlroy have appeared as guests, establishing it as one of Britain's most-watched podcasts.

Neville, who founded the Overlap, explained: "We have wanted to create a daily show for some time now. There was a moment in the last year where a manager was sacked and we didn't have a programme for seven days - at that point we recognised that we needed to go for it.

"The quality and profile of our incredible host line-up speaks to our commitment to deliver the best insights and debate on the biggest football stories, and we'll now be doing this daily."

Simon Pitts, Group CEO of Global and Co-Chair of The Overlap, commented: "The Overlap has created one of the most powerful football brands in the game by putting brilliant talent and genuine fan conversation at the heart of everything it does.

"Overlap Daily takes that ambition to the next level, creating a place for the stories and debates that matter, every day, with an incredible line-up of the best football voices in the business."
