Brighton supporters have rallied a plea against Welbeck's potential Chelsea move.
‘Next year they’ll be renaming Stamford Bridge to The Goldstone! That was the message from a disgruntled Albion fan, as Chelsea plot a move for their veteran striker.
Respected journalists David Ornstein and Alex Crook have posted about the potential transfer, with Crook suggesting ‘personal terms had been agreed’.
Despite this information, nothing has been confirmed by either clubs at the time of writing.
On our Seagulls Facebook page, we asked readers for their honest thoughts on the transfer murmurs.
Argus reader Dave Millard wrote: "Are we just a selling club or are we a club with ambition to win things?”
Another comment highlighted Albion's newfound ‘rivalry’ with Chelsea. Jacqui Timbrell commented: “Anywhere but Chelsea!”
Marc Gravett added: “Chelsea & Hove Albion, this time next year they'll be renaming Stamford Bridge to The Goldstone.
Wayne Sherbourne also made a jibe: “Breaking News. Chelsea have put a bid in for the Amex.
They want their players to feel at home. Probably the pier next."
However, Glen McCready believes it’s good business, and rightfully Danny’s call.
Glen said: “It’s also Danny’s decision and he may well want one final hoorah! “If we can get good money for a 35-year-old, it would be good business.
“Of course, we’d need to bring in a replacement, but we are in a strong position and don’t seem to struggle to attract players.”
Ricky William Wainwright reflected on Welbeck’s journey with the south coast club, and his importance to the team.
Ricky commented: “Danny came to us as a player who could not maintain his fitness.
He is having the best years of his career playing for us and should be thinking very carefully before he jumps ship.
“If he just wants to cash in then fair enough, but if he is enjoying playing, being part of a team, valued for his experience and input as a senior player then he should stay with us.”
Simon Valder: “Must not be allowed to leave without a replacement!”
Tina Lloyd left an emotional message for us. TIna put: “If this happens I will be absolutely gutted for Brighton, the Team, The Fans, Everyone.
“Such a fantastic player and such an asset to the team.”
Tom Peters worries for The Seagulls if their PL top goalscorer goes: “If he goes. Trouble ahead this season.
"No leaders, more games.
"Brighton invigorated his career; maybe if he’s at Chelsea he’ll get the deserved England call-up!”
Even Palace supporter Graham Scott gave his take: “How many more bench warmers Chelsea need.
"Wouldn’t mind him at Palace, soon as the name Chelsea is mentioned, they all go."
Steve Beecroft was shocked at the speculation. He wrote: "In terms of goal scoring, the last 2 seasons have been Welbeck’s most successful in the Premier League.
"Surprised he is considering walking away from another season in Europe with maybe a hero’s farewell as he potentially walks back into his boyhood club."
Marty Higgins believes Danny won’t go anywhere. Mr Higgins wrote: “I don't think Danny will go anywhere he loves it at Albion.
“He knows where his bread is buttered, he could be in our coaching staff at the end of the season.
"Chelsea have some great strikers, I don't think he would get much game time there.”
Nicholas Blake gave a thank-you message to the veteran striker.
Nicholas put: “We have gotten far more out of him than anyone could have expected and I for one, thank him for his service.
“He has one more season in him.
"If this is a move for a final payday I wish him all the best.
“The club will have planned for his end or departure, and I trust they have something lined up. Maybe Liam Delap?
“We do have strikers in the squad, and maybe with a run of games they may do better than Sir Welbeck, so I’m not going to moan.
“Yes, he is an experienced player, but let’s build something new and longer-term planning. “Europa here we come!”
