Two Argyle signings imminent but Malachi Boateng is injured

Boateng suffered a knee ligament injury when he was tackled early in the 1-1 League One draw away to Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park.

The midfielder, who had been making his 48th consecutive league start for Argyle, left the ground after the game on crutches and with a brace on his right knee.

The injury to 24-year-old Boateng came only a day after another Pilgrims' midfielder, Brendan Wiredu, completed a transfer to League Two side Salford City.

Boateng joins former club record signing Michael Baidoo (hamstring), Freddie Issaka (groin) and Owen Oseni (thigh) on the casualty list.

Caleb Watts did make a comeback from an ankle issue as a 64th minute Argyle substitute for Xavier Amaechi against Wycombe, while Jack MacKenzie is near to a return from summer knee surgery.

Argyle head coach Tom Cleverley gave an update on Boateng after the game, as well as revealing two potential new signings had passed medicals on Friday.

Cleverley said about Boateng: "Unfortunately, Malachi looks significant. It's a knee ligament injury. All we can do is give the guys the best processes to be as fit as they can do, which we are, and we need a bit of luck."

Following the departure of Wiredu, Argyle have moved swiftly to bring in two new recruits. "They should both happen Monday, I'm fairly confident of that," said the Pilgrims' boss.

"Obviously there will be a midfielder coming in and a wide player. Medicals took place last evening. It's much easier to do them when you are up in Wycombe. Deals should be announced Monday."

Injuries have been a constant issue for Argyle to deal with over recent times and losing Boateng would be a significant loss for them, especially so early in the new campaign.

Cleverley said: "We went through it all last season. The group of players is strong in quality, I think the staff are strong in quality. If you have a lot of injuries and some poor refereeing decisions your results can be like they were the start of last season.

"We are in a much better place, but those two things can hugely affect the form of a football team and we just need to do the best we can with the cards we are dealt."

Cleverley was unhappy over two refereeing decisions against Wycombe. The first was when Will Evans had a goal ruled out for offside, which would have put the Pilgrims 2-0 up late in the first half.

The Argyle head coach also felt his side should have been awarded a penalty in the second half for a high challenge on Bradley Ibrahim, who had been sent on as an eighth minute substitute for Boateng.
