Carl Rushworth 'pushing' for Coventry City move

Player power appears to be kicking in if latest reports about Coventry City ’s pursuit of Brighton goalkeeper Carl Rushworth are to be believed.

The 25-year-old made no secret of his love for the Sky Blues during his outstanding season-long loan in which he helped Frank Lampard’s side win the Championship and promotion to the Premier League.

The ambitious stopper is determined to play top flight football next season and has gone on record a number of times saying that he’d love to play for Coventry, safe in the knowledge that he would be the club’s first choice.

The big sticking point has, according to several reports, been over the transfer fee with City having had a £20million bid knocked back and Sky Sports News then claiming that one of their sources has told them that a “higher proposal” has also been rejected as Brighton are said to be looking for closer to £30m.

Reports surfaced on Thursday claiming Albion had offered Rushworth to Newcatsle United and Leeds, but Alex Crook, chief football correspondent at talkSPORT claims that the player is now “pushing” for a move to the CBS Arena.

He posted on X: “Understand #NUFC contacted Carl Rushworth’s agent last week but were told his priority is a permanent return to Coventry #PUSB. Feels that will provide a better pathway to a Champions League club and England call-up. #BHAFC remain reluctant sellers but player pushing.

Meanwhile, freelance football writer for GiveMeSport, Sam C, posted on X: “Understand Carl Rushworth to Coventry City is nearly done. Only minor details remain. Parties now confident of getting this over the line.”

Interestingly, Rushworth didn’t feature in Albion’s 4-1 opening pre-season friendly against Wycombe at the club’s training ground on Saturday.

In terms of City’s current options, Ben Wilson has played in both of the club’s pre-season friendlies so far, including Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Northampton Town when Oliver Dovin was named as a substitute on the teamsheet but sat in the stands, presumed injured.
