Docherty spent four years at City and played a key role in Grant McCann's side that lifted the League One trophy at The Valley back in May 2021, becoming a firm favourite on the MKM Stadium terraces.
Now skipper with the Addicks, Docherty's attention is firmly on getting a positive result which would assure Athletic of their place in next season's Championship.
Wednesday night's 2-1 loss at home to Ipswich Town, in which Docherty scored the opener, left Nathan Jones' side five points clear of Oxford United with only two games left, and level on points with West Brom following their two-point deduction on Friday for breaching PSR rules.

Oxford, though, hosts Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday in a game they'll expect to win, which could make things difficult for the Reds, should they lose to a City side that is in desperate need of the points themselves to kick-start their flagging play-off hopes.
"We are coming up against a good team that have their own ambitions," Docherty said ahead of Saturday's reunion with his former employers. "We are under no illusions of how difficult it will be. They have got good attacking players, and we will have to be at our best. But when you do win in this league, you have to be at your best anyway, so it is a game I am looking forward to.
"I will be parking all my previous emotions of the club," the proud Scotsman added. "I am here now, and my full focus is here. I expect a team that will come and attack really well, they score a lot of goals.
"But I think we can counteract that defensively as well, we are a really strong unit, and we are getting back to where we need to be and what gets us good results. The way we have prepared going into the game I am sure we can go and get a good result."
