The Black Cats spent more than £160m as a newly-promoted side last summer, and duly thrived more than survived, finishing seventh and reaching Europe.

Town now look set to break their record cash-splashing this summer, and started their campaign with an impressive 2-1 win over the Black Cats yesterday.

Asked if huge summer spending is what's required to survive in the top tier, Le Bris agreed.

"It's a bit early for the conclusion, but at least for the opening day, it's good," he opined. "It was the case last season.

"It's important to assess the gap between the Championship and the Premier League. It's massive.

"A good start is still important, but consistency throughout the season is a big, big challenge.

"I hope it's going to be positive for them."

Of the game, Le Bris added: “I think overall the performance was not so bad, we were in a situation with the ball dominating the possession and trying to create chances.

“On our mistakes, we conceded two transitions, two goals. So it’s a shame because it’s always difficult to break a well-organised block.

“At the minute we were not clinical enough to create chances, score goals and they made the most of the opportunities.

“I think we were in control when we made those mistakes. It’s a bit different if you are overwhelmed by the pressure and, OK, it’s not easy, but it wasn’t the case for those two mistakes.”
