The Blues claimed a dramatic late victory in the Premier League opener, winning 2-1 - with both Town goals coming from errors made by the Black Cats.

And Belgian star Meunier, who signed for Sunderland in July, was clearly left baffled by their display.

“Very disappointed," he told the club's media team. "If I was to speak honestly, I didn’t expect this at all.

“Most of the time we play at the weekend like we train during the week, but we trained well during the week and we didn’t play well today.

“I don’t know what to think. After the free-kick (equaliser) I thought that we were going back on track. We had a few good actions, a few good moves, were more impacting and I really thought that we would make the difference.

“Maybe it’s new to me. It’s the Premier League and you don’t know what to expect and you cannot underestimate anyone.

“So for the first one I hoped on something better, but unfortunately it was not the case today.”

Put to him that Sunderland created 'a lot of chances', Meunier disagreed.

“A lot of chances? I don’t think so," he insisted. "For me we have to create many, many more chances with the players that we have.

“We cannot say that we played really badly, it’s not true. We had really good moments and periods in the game, but at the end, we had maybe two or three good chances.

“We were dangerous, but in the 16 (yard-box) we were not as dangerous as we have to be to score a goal.

“We saw that Ipswich was playing let’s say more simple, more basic and they were quite efficient at the end.

“In the second half we were lucky to keep the 1-1 until the end of the game. And finally, we killed ourselves today with two big mistakes and the reaction was missing.

“So I hope it was just an off day today.”
