Man United have ideal Tchouameni welcome gift after transfer decision confirmed

Manchester Evening News · Harry Brent

The Real Madrid star, 26, has been linked with a potential £70million move to Old Trafford, as United look to reinforce their midfield ahead of next season. With Casemiro leaving at the end of the season, rebuilding in that area has become a clear priority.

Tchouameni sits high on United's shortlist, but prising him away from Real Madrid - who view the Frenchman as a key figure - will be anything but straightforward. Still, the club can offer more than just financial muscle - they can appeal to familiarity and status.

Casemiro's exit frees up the No. 18 squad number, a number Tchouameni wore during his first two seasons in Spain. The No. 14 shirt is also available, previously worn by Christian Eriksen. Notably, Tchouameni switched to No. 14 in 2024 and has used it at international level with France.

Of course, squad numbers alone won't seal the deal - but United can also point to their upward trajectory. Champions League qualification is within reach, with a healthy gap over sixth placed Brighton, and momentum is building following an impressive resurgence under interim manager Michael Carrick.

There's also a broader project taking shape. Defensive reinforcements arrived in 2024, attacking depth followed in 2025 and now the focus has shifted decisively toward midfield. One signing is expected at minimum but multiple additions are under consideration.

Names such as Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest), Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace), and Carlos Baleba (Brighton) have all been linked. However, Tchouameni has surged to the top of their wish-list in recent weeks.

The Los Blancos star's contract isn't due to expire until 2028 and Real are reportedly keen on extending it. Still, should any uncertainty arise over his long-term role, United may sense an opportunity to bring Madrid to the negotiating table.

The Reds' interest is longstanding. They tracked Tchouameni closely during his time at Monaco before his 2022 move to Madrid, where he has become one of the most effective midfielders in the world.

Prising him away now would require a significant outlay, both in transfer fee and wages. However, United are in a stronger financial position than it may appear. The expected departures of Casemiro and Jadon Sancho - with Marcus Rashford also a possibility - would free up considerable space on the wage bill.

For Tchouameni, the pitch from United is clear: a key role in the team, familiar comforts, and a club rebuilding with intent - not just chasing success, but laying the groundwork for it.
