9/10s and a clear winner - Rating Manchester United's summer signings

Manchester Evening News · John Cross

United looked on course to miss out on Europe once again under Ruben Amorim, but the mid-season appointment of Michael Carrick has transformed their fortunes and the Champions League anthem looks a shoo-in to be played at Old Trafford next season.

Our writers have their say on who should be crowned United's signing of the summer:

Bryan Mbeumo: A couple of months ago, Mbeumo would probably rank as the signing of the season, but unfortunately, he is enduring the first dip of his United career, having gone eight games without a goal and six without an assist. He has certainly had an impressive first season, however, and goals against Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal is evidence of his big-game prowess. Nine goals so far is a solid return, and he will hope for a strong end to the season. 8/10

Benjamin Sesko: The 22-year-old had a slow start under Amorim and found his momentum checked when the Portuguese head coach labelled him a "control freak" and admitted he was struggling. I think he deserves immense credit for bouncing back from that and his record since Amorim left is exceptional. He has eight goals in that time at one every 80 minutes and his ability to make an impact off the bench has been eye-catching. 8/10

Matheus Cunha: Cunha has had a solid first season at United, with some particularly impressive moments, but he is perhaps the signing who has also had the longest flat spots. Some of that can be attributed to the shifts in system and his recent role down the left hasn't always suited him. Conversely, he might also be the signing with the highest ceiling, and I have a feeling he will raise his game in the Champions League next season. 7/10

Senne Lammens: Maybe not the buy of the season, but surely the bargain of the season? Lammens has been outstanding for United and has quickly settled any debate as to the identity of the long-term No.1 at Old Trafford. That he has done so on the back of just one full season as a first-choice in Belgium shows his character and he has handled the pressure and scrutiny at United brilliantly. A great signing and a snip at just over £18million. 9/10

Bryan Mbeumo: Mbeumo's level has dropped over the last few months, but he was the star performer in the first half of the season and looked set to battle for the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award. The forward's excellent start should not be forgotten, and he is proof of why signing Premier League-proven players is a smart transfer strategy. 8/10

Benjamin Sesko: It took Sesko until the end of September to score his first goal for the club. The jury was still out on Sesko in the winter, but he confirmed himself as a top prospect by enjoying a purple patch at the beginning of 2026. The Slovenian demonstrated the kind of quality during that spell to suggest he can become a 20-goal-per-season striker. 7/10

Matheus Cunha: Cunha did not make an immediate impact with goals and assists after signing from Wolves, but his overall performances were still good. Since December, he's taken his game to another level by chipping in with more goal contributions. The Brazilian has also been a great addition to the dressing room. 7/10

Senne Lammens: I was tempted to give Lammens the highest rating from this quartet, but he's been just as good as Mbeumo, for me. The Belgian has made an outstanding impact since his debut in October, transmitting confidence from the back. He could be United's first-choice goalkeeper for the next 10 years. 8/10

Bryan Mbeumo: Judged by his statistical return so far, Mbeumo has probably not given fantastic value for money, to be brutally honest. His tally of ten goals in 29 appearances is decent and on a par with his ratio at Brentford. But three assists is way below his rate with his former club. But behind the stats has been an impactful start and the numbers do no justice to the way the £71million Cameroon attacker unsettles defences with his direct, intelligent running. 7/10

Benjamin Sesko: The 22-year-old has scored some big goals but, presumably, there has been a reason why he has started only 15 Premier League matches. He clearly did not gel with Amorim but Carrick has also used him relatively sparingly. Considering he has come off the bench for 13 of his 30 United appearances, a return of ten goals is not bad. But the Slovenian still has plenty to prove. 6/10

Matheus Cunha: United fans will need to get used to the Brazilian's slightly maverick ways. He has shown he can produce game-changing moments but has also shown he can disappear from view when he is not feeling the vibe. But when he is in the groove, Cunha can make the difference and there is no doubt he will thrive on the Champions League stage next season. A debut campaign to build on. 7/10

Senne Lammens: At less than £20million, the Belgian is United's signing of the season by some distance. Uncomplicated and unassuming, he is unlike so many high-maintenance goalkeepers in United's recent past. Keeps it simple, makes saves he should, does not get too ambitious with his distribution, which will improve over the years. Does not get carried away - again, unlike many modern keepers - and is a load off a manager's mind. 9/10

Bryan Mbeumo: He actually started really well and has evened out a little. But I think his versatility - on the right and as a central threat - makes him a good, versatile forward. Good output but his price tag of £71m means that he should be delivering more. 7/10

Benjamin Sesko: This guy can be one of the best strikers in the world. He is young, raw and cost a lot of money which brings immediate and high expectations. But he is fast, strong, good in the air and holds up the ball. Within two years, he can be one of the very best. The sky is the limit for him. 8/10

Matheus Cunha: He is such an exciting player. I love the fact he set his heart on United, embraced the shirt and wants to entertain. Yes, he is a maverick. Yes, he can be a bit unpredictable. But he can also entertain. Great skill and technique. He wanted the No.10 shirt - and has embraced it. Can become a really special player for United. 8/10

Senne Lammens: Decent business, good value at less than £20m but solid rather than spectacular. His distribution could be better but he makes good saves and is also growing stronger in the hurly burly of Premier League penalty boxes. 7/10

Sky broadcasts more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more with at least 215 live from the top flight alongside Formula 1, darts and golf.

Bryan Mbeumo: When he is on his game, you can see why United tried so desperately to sign Mbeumo. However, he has had a few matches recently where he has been anonymous. That being said, that goal against Manchester City was huge and the Reds look a better team for having him in their squad. 8/10

Benjamin Sesko: Had this been asked at the turn of the year, Sesko would have had to settle for a five. However, Amorim's exit has rejuvenated him and he has shown why he is an upgrade on Rasmus Hojlund. He is not the finished product and could still benefit from a summer signing to share the burden. But he is definitely heading in the right direction. 7/10

Matheus Cunha: I am split on Cunha. Through no fault of his own, he is being used in a position that doesn't match his strengths. Cunha would look a lot better if he was playing down the middle. Instead, he has been forced onto the left due to injury issues. That being said, he has scored some important goals this season and he has improved United. 7/10

Senne Lammens: Lammens has been a revelation for United. Considering how untrustworthy Andre Onana was, the Belgian has been a breath of fresh air. He brings a calmness between the sticks and it is hard to think of any major errors he has made. His £18m fee looks a bargain now as he positions himself to be the Reds' first choice for years to come. It took a while but United have finally replaced David de Gea. 9/10

Bryan Mbeumo: Mbeumo enjoyed a strong start to his United career but has struggled to maintain those high standards throughout the campaign. He is now eight games without a goal but should hit double figures in the Premier League this term. That is an excellent effort and, despite a recent dip in form, he's been a great buy. 8/10

Benjamin Sesko: The Slovenian has already shown that, unlike Hojlund, he impacts the game enough to warrant a place in the team when he is not finding the back of the net regularly. He too looks set for double figures in the league this season and that's a good return for a 22-year-old still adapting to the English game. 7/10

Matheus Cunha: Cunha can go missing quite a lot, but he's the type of player who can be anonymous for large spells and then pop up with the winner. Every good team needs game-changers and Cunha is just that. His ball-carrying ability has been a huge plus for United and you get the sense there is more to come. 7/10

Senne Lammens: While his fellow summer signings have enjoyed peaks and troughs in their first year at United, Lammens has been solid throughout. His distribution can improve but his command of the area is very impressive. Based on his performances alone I would score him 8/10, but when you consider he was the cheapest summer signing and he has probably improved United the most, given what went before him, he gets an extra point. 9/10

Here are the average ratings given to United's 2025 summer signings:

Bryan Mbeumo: 7.66/10 (second place)

Benjamin Sesko: 7.16/10 (joint-third place)

Matheus Cunha: 7.16/10 (joint-third place)

Senne Lammens: 8.33/10 (first place)
