'Alarming' Oliver Glasner verdict after explosive Nottingham Forest rant

Nottingham Post · Sarah Clapson

Steven Gerrard has questioned why Nottingham Forest head coach Oliver Glasner “compromised” in the first place amid a struggle for results.

It has certainly not been the start to the season Forest expected when Glasner became their fifth manager in the space of a year in July. Former Aston Villa and Rangers boss Gerrard has described the Austrian’s post-match comments as “alarming” but supported his view that players must take their fair share of responsibility for the club’s position in the table.

“The surprising thing for me was that he said he's not prepared to compromise anymore,” Gerrard told Sky Bet’s The Overlap. “I think that him going into that job, he should have never compromised from the beginning, because of the amount of manager changes that this group of players have been through.

“It's alarming, the amount of manager changes at Forest in a short space of time. And people might say the owner's trigger-happy, but you've also got to look at the players' performances on the pitch, and their consistency levels are obviously not enough.

“They've had some good times, Forest fans and players, over recent years, but at the same time, there's been a lot of manager change, a lot of manager change, and it's quite alarming. I should imagine the likes of Sean Dyche and Steve Cooper and Vítor Pereira, if they watch this, they're probably thinking, the players, that's the reason why I'm not there.

“And I think Glasner's alluding to the fact that there needs to be a more consistent reaction from this group of players in terms of results, otherwise he's going to be another victim in terms of someone who loses the job. Because Forest, in terms of the players they've got, I know they lack a little bit of clinical finishing in the front line, which I think is hurting them a lot, but I still think this group of players shouldn't be where they are in the league.”

The Reds’ 2-1 triumph over Aston Villa in September remains their sole win under Glasner. On the whole, they have played well in games and have been punished for individual errors and missing a glut of chances.

Gerrard added: “If you look at Morgan Gibbs-White and that level of player, James McAtee and Murillo, they shouldn't be in the relegation zone, in my opinion. I've seen enough from them in the last couple of years, I've seen them at Anfield earlier in the season where they got a draw, to know they're capable of better results consistently. And I think what the manager's saying is, he's not compromising anymore.

“I think he should have never compromised from the beginning anyway. But it was an alarming interview. It was an emotional interview. So, watch this space there, because I think that might be a little bit worse than what we see from the outside. Keep your eye on that one.”
