Argyle player ratings: Deserved victory over AFC Wimbledon

Plymouth Live · Chris Errington

Conor Hazard 6 - Another game in Argyle's superb recent run of away League One results (five wins and one draw from the last seven) where he did not have much to do. He had no chance to keep out Alistair Smith's close range equaliser for Wimbledon early in the second half and his best save of the match came in the closing seconds when he pushed away a curling free-kick from Steve Seddon.

Joe Edwards 7 - Argyle should have been more than 1-0 up at half-time and the captain was one of those who had a great opportunity to get a second goal for them whent he ball broke to him inside the box but his shot from an excellent position flew over the bar, with Edwards claiming goalkeeper Nathan Bishop had got a touch to it. Moved from right-back into central midfield for the Pilgrims during the second half.

Mathias Ross 7 - Wimbledon were lacking firepower because of injuries to strikers Omar Bugiel and Matty Stevens, and while Wimbledon's 18-year-old Spanish attacker Junior Nkeng did pose a few problems for Argyle at times, generally the centre-back pairing of Ross and Alex Mitchell were dominant

Alex Mitchell 8 STAR MAN - Opened the scoring in only the sixth minute, getting a decisive touch at the far post after Malachi Boateng flicked the ball on from a Ronan Curtis corner. Mitchell could have added a second goal later in the first half but headed over the bar after another Curtis delivery. It was particularly impressive the way he often stepped in and intercepted the ball before it even reached a Wimbledon attacking player.

Wes Harding 7 - The right-footed Harding continued to line-up at left-back for the Pilgrims and on his return to the capital the on-loan Millwall defender put in a solid performance. He got the assist for Lorent Tolaj's goal to make it 2-1 in the 68th minute when he flicked the ball towards his team-mate inside the penalty area.

Ronan Curtis 7 - As so often since Curtis joined Argyle from Port Vale in January and became their regular corner taker, his delivery from those set pieces was excellent, and led to Alex Mitchell's early goal. Even before that, the bright and busy Curtis whipped in a cross which was headed narrowly wide by Caleb Watts.

Malachi Boateng 7 - While Lorent Tolaj and Bim Pepple have to be strong contenders for Argyle Player of the Year honours, Boateng must be too for his sheer consistency and reliability over 43 successive starts in League One this term. You can now almost take for granted at times the amount of ground he covers during a game.

Brendan Wiredu 6 - Gave the Pilgrims some extra steel in central midfield as he returned from a four-match absence due to an abdominal issue and played for an hour against Wimbledon before being substituted.

Owen Dale 7 - Found lots of space on the Argyle left in the second half and had a couple of very good scoring chances, but tried to set up Caleb Watts instead on one occasion and also had an attempt saved by Nathan Bishop. The industrious Dale did come up with the assist when Bim Pepple made it 3-1 in the 76th minute when he unselfishly squared the ball inside to the striker after he had run onto a pass from Lorent Tolaj.

Lorent Tolaj 7 - The quality of the finish for Tolaj's goal to give Argyle a 2-1 lead was exceptional. He had to stretch slightly to reach the pass from Wes Harding but with his trusty left foot he was able to place the ball on the volley perfectly into the far corner of the net. Even though he was unable to get too much power on the shot, the precision of it meant Nathan Bishop could not get to it. Not many strikers could have executed the chance as well as Tolaj did.

Bim Pepple 7 - A welcome return to action for Pepple after being out for two games with a calf issue. He replaced Caleb Watts as the strike partner to Lorent Tolaj and made it 3-1 in the 76th minute with a close range finish after he was set up by Owen Dale for his 16th goal of the season. Pepple could have added another one in the closing stages of the game but could not finish off a cross from Xavier Amaechi.

Matty Sorinola 7 - Brought good energy to the team when he was sent on for Brendan Wiredu in the 62nd minute and played at right-back, with Joe Edwards pushed into central midfield.

Xavier Amaechi 7 - Was a straight swap on the right side of midfield for Ronan Curtis when he was sent on immediately after Lorent Tolaj had put the Pilgrims 2-1 up. Had an important touch of the ball in the buiild-up to Argyle's third goal, flicking it on to Tolaj to launch the attack.

Julio Pleguezuelo - Another returning from injury, Pleguezuelo played his first game since the end of February as an 85th minute substitute for Lorent Tolaj. Argyle, defending a two-goal lead, went from a back four to a central defensive trio to see out the match, with Pleguezuelo joining Alex Mitchell and Mathias Ross.

Substitutes (not used): Luca Ashby-Hammond, Jamie Paterson, Owen Oseni
