Magnificent seven maintains Wrexham

Looking to claim the title once again this season, Jenny Sugarman’s charges made it three wins out of three with a 7-0 triumph in their meeting with Barry Town United, who are still searching for their first point of the campaign.

The focus ahead of the latest match was about maintaining the positivity within the camp and Ava Suckley told the club: “I think we’re all excited. Obviously, the first two games went as best as they could do and I think that, yeah, we’re just keen to keep the run going and the momentum.”

From Barry’s perspective, they will have been keen to shore up the backline as they looked to respond from their 9-1 thrashing against The New Saints seven days earlier.

Suckley had the first opportunity of the afternoon from Maria Francis-Jones’ cross, but she couldn’t steer her effort home.

However, the Reds did take the lead in the 17th minute when Natasha Thomas scored for the third game in a row.

Within five minutes and Wrexham had a second goal to celebrate. It was Suckley who doubled her side’s advantage when she scored at the far post after Barry failed to clear a corner.

Thomas had an effort saved by Molly Arneson as the home side looked to add to their tally prior to the interval.

Wrexham put the game to bed with their third goal midway through the second half.

Last season’s top scorer Katie Barker struck for the third game in a row as she fired into the corner of the net, following Faye Knox’s through ball.

A further positive came for the Reds when Mikayla Wildgoose was introduced off the bench in her first appearance after recovering from a long-term injury.

The Reds added to their tally in the concluding 10 minutes. Lili Jones prodded in her side’s fourth goal and this was soon followed by Francis-Jones’ strike.

Then, with a minute left to play, Evie Sadler found the target for the second weekend in a row.

Barker scored her second and Wrexham’s seventh in stoppage time.

Matching the 7-0 scoreline were leaders The New Saints, who prevailed at Aberystwyth Town. Caitlin Chapman netted a hat-trick for the Saints.

Cardiff City secured their first win of the season with a 3-2 outcome over Briton Ferry Llansawel, while Swansea continued their perfect start with a 3-1 win against Cardiff Met.
