Five things we learned from Wrexham

A first home win of the season arrived on Saturday as Phil Parkinson's side beat in-form Southampton 2-1 at their north Wales stadium.

Kieffer Moore gave the Reds the lead at the break and although the Saints equalised early in the second half, an 89th minute own goal sealed victory.

Here's five talking points from the game.

1. The perfect way to respond to a heavy defeat.

Wrexham went into Saturday's game on the back of a 6-0 thrashing at West Ham who are favourites for the Championship title.

Although the Hammers played well, the Reds just weren't good enough and a reaction was needed against a Southampton side who are in good form.

Not for the first time under Parkinson, Wrexham bounced back from a defeat by securing a hard-fought win and it was much needed.

2. Three weeks until the next game.

It is an extended international break with Wrexham not in action now until they make the trip to Derby County on Saturday October 10.

Picking up a win heading into the hiatus means spirits have been lifted in the wake of the mauling at West Ham, and the league position looks a lot better with the Reds up to 14th place.

The break gives players a chance to get a welcome breather after a hectic start to the campaign and others time to recover from knocks, but Wrexham would probably have welcomed a game sooner after picking up a second win in eight games.

3. Jacques Ekomie is proving to be a brilliant signing.

Playing wing-back is a demanding position with Parkinson looking for his players to bomb forward to support attacks as well as do their bit at the back.

The Reds' boss strengthened in that position over the summer and he has plenty of options on both wings, with Ekomie really looking the part down the left.

He has already scored two goals and offers so much when he attacks, with his cross leading to an own goal and late winner against Southampton.

4. Parkinson silences the doubters.

There was outside pressure on the Reds boss after the thrashing at West Ham, the heaviest defeat of his five-year reign.

But Wrexham have made a habit of bouncing back from adversity under the 58-year-old and they did it once again by digging in to beat Southampton.

There is still a long way to go in the season and there will be mores lows as well as highs, but this result is something to build on when Wrexham return to action.

5. Supporters stay loyal to their manager.

After the thrashing to West Ham, Wrexham and Parkinson came in for criticism.

It was an awful performance which the manager didn't defend, but a reaction was needed and we got in as Wrexham bounced back by beating in-form Southampton.

Reds fans sang Parkinson's name when the teams walked out onto the pitch ahead of kick-off and he admitted he was touched by their backing, but it was no more than he deserves after achieving so much in his time as Wrexham boss.
