Why Frank Lampard had to apologise to Vincent Kompany amid awkward text exchange

Coventry Telegraph · Andy Turner

Frank Lampard has revealed that he is embarrassed and felt the need to apologise to Vincent Kompany after receiving a congratulatory message from his former team-mate.

The Coventry City boss has been inundated with texts and voicemails from old team-mates and managers, including one of his favourite coaches from his Chelsea playing days, Jose Mourinho, after guiding the Sky Blues to the Championship title and promotion back to the Premier League.

Lampard has often cited Mourinho as a great inspiration during their glittering time at Stamford Bridge, and asked if the Portuguese coach, now in charge of Benfica, has been in touch this week after Tuesday night’s 5-1 victory over Portsmouth confirmed Coventry as champions, the 47-year-old said: “Yeah, it was quite brief. He’s a brief texter, so it was like a two-liner. But it was nice and he will always be in touch with things like that.”

He then went on to reveal that he had an awkward exchange with his old Manchester City skipper, Kompany, who is now manager of Bayern Munich. The German giants beat Real Madrid 4-3 last week in an incredible Champions League game which Lampard enjoyed watching on TV, two days before taking the Sky Blues to Ewood Park where they confirmed their automatic promotion with a point against Blackburn Rovers.

“I actually had one from Vincent Kompany and he said to me, ‘congratulations’ after Blackburn, and I messaged him back and I said, ‘well, I feel a bit embarrassed because I’ve just watched you beat Real Madrid the other night and I didn’t message you, and you’re messaging me for a 1-1 draw at Blackburn,’ and that’s what it was.

“So it’s nice when people in the game sort of understand and pay due respect, which I try and do. So yeah, Vinny called me there and I sort of semi-apologised, but it’s been nice to get the messages and the support that’s come in from all parts, not just football people but from everywhere, pretty much my phone list.”

Breaking into a chuckle, he added: “So it’s meant that I’ve had to re-engage with people, which sometimes you don’t want to do so much. But I’ve spent some time getting back to everyone.”
