Watford add defender Greenwood as WSL 2 prep continues

Watford Women have made their third signing in a week, adding defender Hannah Greenwood from WSL 2 rivals Sunderland.

Greenwood has played in the second tier for both Newcastle and the Mackems, for whom she featured 17 times during 2025/26.

Described as a "quick, athletic" player by the club, the 27-year-old can also operate as a midfielder.

Having started out at Durham, Greenwood also played 48 times for the Magpies before moving to their north-east rivals.

Greenwood follows Zara Bailey and Ellie Noble through the door in recent days, with many more additions expected ahead of a likely takeover from Norwegian investment company Pitch15.

The Watford Observer understands only WSL approval stands between the club and a takeover, with Pitch15 not expected to pay a transactional fee but set to take on the increased budget required to compete at WSL 2 level.

Of the takeover, the Watford FC Women Supporters Group told The Watford Observer : "As supporters who follow the Golden Girls through every high and low, we see this potential takeover by Pitch15 as an incredibly exciting step forward.

"Moving back up to WSL 2 brings new financial demands, and having dedicated investment from an organisation solely focused on women’s sport is a huge positive for the team’s future.
